Home Science Practicals: From Thread to Fashion Runway
This area introduces learners to textile skills through hands-on design and construction. Students develop fine motor skills, patience, and creativity while learning how the clothes we wear are made and the cultural significance of different textiles.
Sewing & Garment Construction
Learners move from basic hand stitches to using modern sewing machines. This practical session focuses on the fundamentals of assembly, teaching students how to turn flat fabric into 3D objects through precision and logic.
The session includes learning various stitch types, pattern application, safe use of tools, and the satisfaction of creating a tangible finished product — a core life skill for self-reliance.
Textile Science & Heritage
Fabric is more than just material — it's science and history. Learners explore different fibre types, weaving methods, and the rich cultural heritage of African prints and textiles.
This section helps students understand the environmental impact of textiles and the technological advancements in modern fashion, aligning with both CBC Science and Social Studies.
Fashion Runway & Confidence
The final step is presentation. Learners showcase their creations on the Fashion Runway, developing self-esteem, public speaking skills, and a sense of accomplishment in their work.
This activity builds "Creative Expression" and "Self-Efficacy" — key CBC core competencies. Students learn that their work has value and should be shared with pride.
"When a learner walks the runway wearing something they constructed themselves, they aren't just wearing clothes — they are wearing their own problem-solving, persistence, and creativity."
